The establishment of Marine Data Solutions (Pty) Ltd. is a result of the decision of Transnet Ltd. to exit from the operations of Marine Data Systems (MDS). MDS specialized in the provision of Automatic Identification Systems, Vessel Traffic Management as well as Information Systems .

Marine Data Solutions is a private South African company owned by NorControl IT based in Norway and a South African Black Economic Empowerment Group. Marine Data Solutions took over part of the business and key people of MDS and is perfectly positioned to be of service to the worlds Ports and Coastal Authorities with particular focus on Africa. The company's headquarters are based in Cape Town.
